After a recent cold front that had much of the United States in temperatures way below normal we received a call from a mechanic having trouble with a CJA microprocessor based controller that was installed in 2007. His LCD fault code was TNS, indicating that the Top Normal Slow down was not being activated or was set too close to the Top Normal Stop Switch. After some initial diagnostic work he was unable to get the car to run after he had recycled the power on the mainline. The elevator was trying to run but just wasn’t.

Support Log/Tips For Future Projects:

TNS Error Code

1.Linked to Timing/Top Normal Slow Down Limit Not being activated in certain period of time.

Action Items: Check Top Normal Limit Switch to ensure it is functioning properly.

2. Reset power to elevator, elevator should head down to first floor for reset. Try running car up to top floor if fault still indicates check to see if elevator is running.

Support Summary

In this case the elevator was outside and in Florida. Temperatures were at 32 degrees. Elevator was trying to move the piston but the oil was too cold to do so. A recommendation that a oil tank heater be installed. Mechanic indicated that the temperatures regularly get down to 50 degrees.

**WARNING***Please note that elevators should ONLY be worked on by liscensed elevator mechanics. Proper lockout/tag out and other safety measures must be taken to ensure that no deaths or serious injuries occur. The information provided in this post is ONLY for the mechanic working on the elevator.
